Botanic Baby Master FAQ: Expert Guidance for Modern Families

Welcome to our consolidated knowledge base. These answers are forged from 11 years of commercial laundry expertise and engineered to simplify your cloth nappy journey.

Section 1: The Basics & Getting Started

Q: How many nappies do I actually need to get started?

A: For a full-time stash washing every 2 days, we recommend 18–24 inserts and 7 covers. If you have a larger stash, our 100% Australian Cotton allows you to extend your wash cycle up to 7 days, provided your machine can handle the volume.

Q: How do I prep my nappies before the first use?

A: Raw Australian cotton contains natural oils. To reach maximum absorbency, wash your new inserts 3–4 times on a hot cycle (no detergent needed) before putting them on your baby for the first time.

Q: Why do you use Cotton instead of Bamboo for everyday nappies?

A: Longevity. While bamboo is soft, it is fragile when wet and degrades quickly under frequent, heavy washing. We use 100% Australian Cotton for our core inserts because it is strong enough to be used for multiple children.

Section 2: The Botanic Wash Method (Maintenance)

Q: What temperature should I wash my nappies at?

A: For routine cleaning, 60°C is our recommended wash temperature. To thermally sanitise your cotton inserts, wash them on a cotton cycle at 65°C or higher for at least 10 minutes. Choose a cycle that holds 65°C or higher for at least 10 minutes (check your machine's manual). Our cotton inserts withstand washes up to 95°C. Note: Always keep waterproof covers to a maximum of 60°C.

Q: Is my laundry detergent safe for Botanic Baby?

A: Most standard Australian laundry powders are excellent. Avoid "Eco" detergents that rely solely on plant enzymes (which may not break down human waste effectively) and never use fabric softeners, as they coat the fibres and destroy absorbency. If you need softness try a vinegar rinse. See my nappies feel stiff after line drying.

Section 3: Troubleshooting (Forum "Hot Topics")

Q: I’ve heard about "Stripping" nappies. Do I need to do this? (The Reddit Myth)

A: No. "Stripping" is usually a harsh chemical process used to fix poor wash routines in synthetic nappies. If you follow the Botanic Baby Two-Part Wash Method, you will never need to strip your nappies.

Q: My cotton nappies feel stiff after line drying. How do I fix this?

A: This is common with natural fibres in hard-water areas. To keep them soft:

  1. Add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to your rinse cycle.

  2. Give them a quick 10-minute "fluff" in the dryer on low heat after they are line dry.

  3. "Snap" the nappies (give them a good shake) before hanging them up.

Q: I’m worried about "Ammonia Burn." How do I prevent it?

A: Ammonia is the result of bacteria breaking down urea. It only happens if nappies aren't being cleaned deeply enough. Our Pre-Wash (Step 1 of our method often managed by your machine cycle) removes the bulk of the urine daily.

Q: What should I do about night-time leaks?

A: Toddlers and heavy wetters often out-pee a single insert at night. The solution is Boosting. Upgrade your size, use a second cotton insert if you are in a pinch, or one of our Cotton-Bamboo Blended Boosters to increase the capacity for those long 12-hour stretches or growth spurts.

Section 4: Ethics & Sustainability

Q: Where are Botanic Baby products made?

A: Our core inserts are grown, knitted, and finished right here in Australia. For specialized materials like our cotton-cashmere blends, we source from ethical global partners (like our cashmere from Inner Mongolia, or teas from Sri Lanka) but maintain strict control over the raw materials and final Melbourne-based manufacturing.  Where products have been sourced close to the origin of yarn,  like the nappy covers which are 100% Polyester covers from Zhejiang Province,  Hangzhou, we have certifications on the ethical supply chain. We have chosen recycled polyester that has a renewable pathway.  If it was blended the product would be difficult to recycle.

Q: What is "The Botanic Circle"?

A: It is our commitment to a circular economy. When your Botanic Baby items are finally outgrown or reach the end of their long life, you can return them to us.

Q: Is your packaging plastic-free?

A: Yes. We use unbleached, recycled cardboard.   We believe the unboxing experience should be as pure as the products inside.  We do use compostable labels and where there is food packaging the products have been sustainably sourced as part of our circular packaging.
